It sounded like a story that I could relate to; misdiagnosis leading to a life of struggle, frustration, disappointment, loneliness, depression. The list goes on.

     

    Here is where things took a turn. This person made a very emphatic effort to make it clear that they did not become disabled through any means of their own neglect; including being clumsy, drunk or otherwise.

     

    I don’t feel their profile on socials, during their message and story, is where it is appropriate to make my point.

     

    Read on.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”8641″ img_size=”1080×1920″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Whether it’s congenital, an accident, or just the way the universe unfolds, these circumstances lead us all to face similar challenges in life. I don’t feel the catalyst to one’s disability is relevant to their current struggle.

     

    I encourage everyone to reject the stigma that assumes people choose to become disabled or that disability is a result of laziness or punishment for poor decisions. When we validate the reasons behind our disabilities, we inadvertently support that harmful stigma.

     

    One of the reasons I emphasize this is the unfortunate reality of major corporations earning millions while their staff struggle to pay rent, and during financial crises, they receive government handouts to subsidize poor management and executive salaries. It essentially rewards bad behaviour, leaving those who already enjoy financial security in luxury.

     

    However, imagine a different scenario, where that bailout money and tax cuts are invested in an infrastructure that fosters true accessibility and dignity for all. A world where accessibility goes beyond a mere ramp or push button hidden in a corner and becomes a fundamental aspect of society.

     

    Now, where does that money come from? It’s time to turn up the volume of our voices and speak and act out against corporations sitting on millions of assets and the executives who received bonuses during times of crisis. Not to mention the elected public officials who facilitate this instead of doing what is actually the right thing to do.

     

    In my experience, disabled individuals are often perceived as lazy because we may need assistance with household chores or errands due to physical limitations. Or perhaps the stigma arises because the tools that we use to reduce our struggles look like a toy or fun to an able-bodied observer. However, this current stigma dismisses essential services like cleaning as a luxury rather than recognizing them as necessary for our well-being and human rights.

     

    Every year, I, along with many of my fellow disabled individuals, find ourselves having to declare that we haven’t miraculously cured our incurable conditions. My experience through this leaves me with feelings of humiliation, degradation, depression, inadequacy, and inequality, which are inherently inhumane.

     

    It’s time for a change.

     

    I would encourage all to examine their behaviours, mindsets, reactions, and biases when they encounter folks with disabilities and the spaces everyone moves around to. Are you contributing to the stigma, or are you actively fighting it?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

    Also, probably best to prepare for disappointment, once you get whatever “it” is that you are supposed to be waiting for.

    A few times since watching, I have found myself pondering; “was this video such a desperate attempt at ‘attention and fame’ that the content creator’s judgment, problem solving or reasoning skills had been clouded or if this content creator genuinely thought they had come up with a “banger of an idea”.

     

    We should all be able to agree that it is not uncommon to see many content creators grasping at any idea and throwing any video out there, hoping their video “sticks” to something and becomes the next viral hit.

     

    In this video reel I viewed; a “helpful parent” with SO many kids, and SO not enough time, who had this “SO HELPFUL” idea, to help speed up pancake breakfast on those, “busy mornings where you have to get everyone out the door”.

     

    Sounds great! Right? I mean who doesn’t want pancakes? (Well, to be honest I would rather a waffle, but those are a wee bit more difficult.)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]In this reel, this “super parent” with this “super great idea, you guys” suggested following these steps for having a super fast pancake breakfast.

     

    1. Buy Instant Pancake Mix
    2. Make a batch, per the instructions on the box
    3. Pour the batter into ice cube trays
    4. Add blueberries or chocolate chips to each section if you want some extra fun
    5. Put pancake batter ice cube tray in freezer
    6. Pop out “batter cubes” when you want to make pancakes

Not always by choice.

     

    My question here is; if you do not have time to mix 2 ingredients together, how do you have time to wait for batter to thaw?

     

    It is instant pancake mix. Put instant mix in bowl, add the required liquid (just water) a little bit at a time until you get the right consistency for pancake batter. Let the batter rest, if you want a fluffy pancake, while you set up the coffee pot or go shower, come back make pancake.

     

    After a few times you will learn to eyeball how much pancake mix you need and then slowly add the water. It is simply a ratio between powder and liquid and when there is only 1 powder and 1 liquid to mix, you are not saving any time by mixing up the batter ahead of time, freezing it to have to thaw it out later.

     

    This idea of dropping cubes of frozen batter only works if you want a mess,  a failed breakfast of half burnt half batter pancakes, hungry angry kids, a growly stomach and a trip to the drive-thru on the way to soccer practise.

    NOTWITHSTANDING

     

    I cannot help but think that every one of those moments, during my educational journey, where a student whined, “when am I ever gonna need this?” was the moment that should have been met with more “because you are going to be a grown up some day and have to handle some grown up business” instead of “SILENCE! HEADS DOWN – EYES ON YOUR PAPER”.

    Everything Premier Ford has done, and dare I even say other politicians of the conservative ilk have all done, is rely on a huge number of those kids that just barely squeaked by, the ones that whined about fractions or the Dewey Decimal System, the ones that whined, “when am I going to ever use this in real life”, to be adults now and so fucking confused they just throw up their hands and hope somebody else can figure it out.

     

    Keep them tired. Keep them hungry. Keep them sick. Keep them dumb.

     

    Overwork the parent who has to work 3 jobs to just barely be able to put food on the table and a roof over their head. But the food is not fresh. It is mostly processed, kids aren’t getting enough nutrition, so they are running at less than 100% as well. Immune systems are compromised due to malnutrition, hence the kids are always sick.

     

    Teachers. Wear them down too. Pay them shit. Cut their funding for supplies, tools, resources, development. More hours. Less pay. More stress. Keep the teachers and support staff at near breaking point. Just so the system doesn’t crash but just the bare minimum gets done so nothing snaps.

    I will hazard a guess it would be because no one explained to them the “why” they are going to need to know or use this. Maybe nobody told them their voice counts.

    Put a Ring On It

     

    Truly, nothing like I have ever worn before. It is so light weight that my brain seems to have trouble understanding that I am actually holding on to something that looks so solid. If I apply pressure to it, I expect it to snap. The ring doesn’t even flex.

     

    New materials are just as important to innovation as the idea itself…

    My journey with cockrings, for a good portion, has been a very windy road and not without injury either.

     

    Snaps, bands, metal, leather, latex, rubber, silicone, neoprene, probably somethings I have forgotten and now 3D printed plastic.

     

    The Black Cherry Bomb Geometric cockring by Russell Hardwear, has been constructed using 100% Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) which is shockingly light weight, super strong and and each piece is hand buffed to a perfectly smooth finish, by Ryan Russell himself.

     

    I find myself quite fascinated with this cockring; if I am not wearing it, I am often fiddling with it, running my fingers over the surfaces. I find it to be quite soothing.
